Breaking into the marketing industry as a student can feel a little overwhelming. There are so many different roles, companies, and career paths to explore, and it’s not always clear where to begin. While strong coursework and technical skills are important, one of the best ways to actually learn about the industry and discover opportunities is through networking.

For marketing students, networking helps connect what we learn in class with how marketing works in the real world. Talking to professionals, hearing about their experiences, and asking questions can give you insights that you don’t always get from textbooks or lectures. It also helps students understand what different marketing roles look like day to day and what skills companies are really looking for.

Networking Events

One of the easiest ways to start networking is by attending events hosted by your school. At the Schulich School of Business, for example, events like the MMKG speed networking session give students the chance to meet professionals from different companies and industries. These events are great because they allow students to have short conversations with people who are already working in marketing. Even a quick five minute conversation can lead to helpful advice, a new LinkedIn connection, or sometimes even a follow up coffee chat. Networking events also help students become more comfortable introducing themselves and talking about their interests and career goals.

Coffee Chats

Another common way students network is through coffee chats, also known as informational interviews. A coffee chat is simply a casual conversation with someone who works in a role or company that you’re interested in. During these conversations, students can ask questions about the person’s career path, their daily responsibilities, and the skills that helped them succeed in marketing. These chats are valuable because they give students honest advice and real perspectives on the industry. Many professionals are happy to share their experiences and help students who are curious about the field.

Using LinkedIn

Networking also happens online, especially through platforms like LinkedIn. LinkedIn makes it easy to connect with professionals, learn about companies, and stay updated on industry trends. Students can use LinkedIn to reach out to professionals for informational chats, follow companies they’re interested in, and share posts about their own experiences, projects, or events they attend.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, networking is really about building relationships. The people you meet through events, coffee chats, or LinkedIn can become mentors, collaborators, or even future coworkers. For marketing students, networking can open doors to opportunities and help you learn more about the industry. The earlier you start building those connections, the more valuable they can become throughout your career.
